Understanding 4-20mA Signal Isolation & the benefits of using Isolators

In many factories and machines, sensors measure things like temperature, pressure, or speed. These sensors send their information as an electrical signal called a 4-20mA current loop.

Signal Flow in Industrial Automation

  • Field Device: Like Sensors detect a parameter ( eg Pressure & Temperature)
  • Transmitter: Converts Raw Signal into a standardized Analog Signal ( 4–20 mA current loop or voltage 0–10 V)
  • Controller (PLC/DCS) → Scales/calculates the value, then takes logic/actions.
  • Final Control Element → E.g., adjusts a valve, starts a motor – regulates the process.

A signal isolator is used in the industrial automation signal loop to provide electrical isolation, signal conditioning, and noise reduction between different sections of the signal chain.

Think of isolation like noise-cancelling headphones for signals—it keeps the sensor’s message clear without outside electrical disturbances, preventing errors and equipment damage.

Where a Signal Isolator is Used in a Process Control Loop?

Between the Transmitter and Controller Input

  • The most common location for a signal isolator is between the field transmitter output and the controller (PLC/DCS) input card.
  • This isolates the controller from:
    • Ground loops (caused by different grounding potentials in field devices and control room equipment).
    • Electrical noise and interference from field wiring or long cable runs.
    • Voltage spikes or surges that might damage sensitive controller input cards.

Other Possible Locations

  • Between different control system modules (e.g., between PLC and final control element actuators).
  • At signal branching points, where one signal is distributed to multiple devices.
  • Where different power grounds or earth references exist that may cause signal interference or ground loop currents.

 Application of Signal isolation

  • Data Acquisition & Instrumentation: Used to isolate sensor signals before they are digitized for monitoring and logging.
  • Process Control Systems: To clean signals from pressure, temperature, Flow & level transmitter.
  • Long Distance Signal Transmission: Maintains signal Fidelity when transmitted over hundreds of meters where voltage drops and noise are likely.
